Areas of Practice
CLINICAL OPHTHALMOLOGY
I am a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with 30 years experience in my specialty. I am a Supra-Regional Glaucoma Specialist and believe passionately in the trinity of clinical medicine, education and research. I work both for the NHS and have an independent Private Practice.
SURGICAL MENTORING
I run one-to-one, group and virtual surgical mentoring sessions. I specialise in the surgical minutiae necessary to optimise outcomes and minimise complications of surgery. My particular areas of interest are : Trabeculectomy + MMC and complex cataract and complex glaucoma surgery.
CHARITABLE WORK
My principal charitable work has been with a team of surgeons at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre in Tanzania, East Africa, developing a world-class glaucoma laser and surgery facility. I have worked closely with Dr. Heiko Philippin and remain his long-term mentor.
RESEARCH
I am Co-Director of the Birmingham Institute for Glaucoma Research. My team have published over 140 peer-reviewed research articles. My active areas of research are: prevention of glaucoma blindness, optimising surgery, patient safety and preventing childhood eye injuries.
ELITE PERFORMANCE MENTORING
I have developed a generic Elite Performance Program (EPP) designed to help individuals and groups that want to optimise performance. I focus on: elite surgical performance, building mental resilience and reflections on elite performance. I also deliver the EPP virtually - eg. via Zoom.
LITERATURE
The study of literature and creative writing is one of my main areas of interest outside medicine. I graduated with a Masters of Arts with Distinction in 2019 from the Teesside University Creative Writing Program, lead by the brilliant Sophie Nicholls. My specialist genre is short stories.
EDUCATION
I have been interested in teaching and education for 30 years and have previously worked as the Director of Education for the UCL Partners ‘Eyes & Vision’ program at Moorfields Eye Hospital. I run masterclasses in: glaucoma, surgery, ocular surface disease and Consultant Survival Skills.
STRATEGIC SOLUTIONS
In the strategic solutions business sector I use 40 years of experience solving NHS and commercial problems to tackle the complex challenges faced in the UK health sector - specialising in glaucoma capacity management and in-sourcing solutions and patient safety strategies.
NUTRITION
Optimal nutrition underpins wellbeing and the ability to perform maximally. Investing time to get nutrition right will create energy within your life. My specialist areas of interest are: energy management, micronutrients and health and a holistic approach to nutrition.
