Surgical Mentoring

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.

Trabeculectomy + Anti-scarring Mitomycin C

I have performed over 1000 Trabeculectomy operations and have been involved in many of the key developments in this operation over the last 25 years. I have trained over 25 national and international Senior Glaucoma Fellows in this operation. Together with Professor Graham Lee in Australia, I developed and published the first model for wet-lab trabeculectomy surgery, to enable trainee surgeons to learn all the critical steps of the operation before operating on live patients.

Trabeculectomy + Anti-scarring Mitomycin C is a complex operation, and I specialise in teaching the surgical minutiae of the critical steps. In order to achieve the highest success rates in the world, it is necessary to focus on modifiable risk factors in the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative period. I have developed a range of strategies to minimise complications in each of these areas.

I perform both one-to-one and group mentoring sessions in surgery.

Complex Cataract Surgery

I have spent 30 years specialising in complex cataract surgery. I have developed a range of strategies to anticipate and avoid intra-operative complications and optimise results. I also mentor in managing intra-operative and post-operative rare complications. Preparing in advance for the large range of unusual situations that occur in complex cataract surgery significantly increases patient safety. I lecture in techniques to avoid litigation in cataract surgery.

Complex Glaucoma Surgery

I specialise in teaching more complex glaucoma operations including:

  • Tube Drainage Surgery

  • Cyclodialysis Cleft Repair

  • Anterior Segment Reconstruction

  • Glaucoma Bleb Revision Surgery

  • Management of Post-Operative Hypotony

It is essential to have a full range of glaucoma surgery skills if one is to undertake the full range of glaucoma surgery for blinding disease.
